New world record for the longest drive despite less than favorably weather conditions including torrential rain and strong crosswinds, Slater, stepped up onto the TrueStrike golf mat, teed up the shot and launched a drive 720 yards down the runway.
This beat the previous best of 696 yards set by Stuart Appleby in Melbourne just last month. Slater said: “I knew it was right as soon as I hit it. You know when you’ve hit a good shot; you get the surge going right up through your body. That’s what we do it for really.”
Celebrities such as rock legend Rick Wakeman, All Black Zinzan Brooke, and Wasps and England second-row forward Simon Shaw also tried their luck at breaking the record as did some junior players. Shaw took the amateur prize with an impressive 465 yards drive and Bianca Finn, 14, is believed to have set a new under-16 and ladies record with her 510-yard effort.
The event took place on the runway at London City Airport meaning organisers, The London Golf Show and Long Drivers of Europe, had to find a golf mat suitable for these big hitters to safely hit off. The TrueStrike golf mat was the obvious choice because of its uniquely realistic playing surface and it’s specially designed tee holder and tee. The teeing system means the TrueStrike tee will remain in the holder when struck with a club but can easily be removed by hand.
Philip Sear, the owner of TrueStrike Ltd, said, “It was great to see the LDE guys using the mat when trying to break the record. We were very pleased to hear the positive response from everyone especially regarding the teeing system – people were impressed not only because the tee remains in position when struck but also because it is fully adjustable too.”
